The golden rule of sale shopping is to only buy pieces you really want or need. It's all too easy to get seduced by hefty savings and urgent marketing messages imploring us not to miss out, but a bargain is only a bargain if it's a saving on an item you will truly appreciate day in and day out.
It's well worth looking to pay for more expensive items, like furniture, using a credit card. Anything you buy with a credit card that costs between £100 and £30,000 is protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, this makes your card provider as liable as the retailer if something should go wrong with your purchase. For example, if an item arrives faulty, or perhaps even never arrives, you'll be able to claim a refund through your credit card company. This also applies if you pay a proportion on your credit card (say, a deposit) but the rest in cash or on a debit card.
It's also well worth knowing your rights should you end up with a big-ticket item that doesn't perform. Have a read of your consumer rights when buying a sofa, which can equally apply to most furniture investments.
When to shop for the best furniture deals
Although good discounts can crop up at any time of year, most retailers tend to follow a pattern when running promotions, with the biggest furniture discounts likely to fall at a few key times of year.
We've collated a quick guide to the key dates to look out for below:
Boxing Day furniture deals
If you're done with the turkey and ready to nab a bargain, then you'll usually find some great Boxing Day furniture deals just after Christmas. In fact, in recent years, Boxing Day furniture deals have started well before Boxing Day itself, with stores increasingly offering discounts as soon as their pre-Christmas shipping dates have passed.
January furniture deals
Hang on a bit longer than Boxing Day, and you might find an even lower price if the mattress you have your eye on is included in the January furniture deals most brands offer.
Retailers know most of us are a strapped for cash in January thanks to Christmas spending, so there can be some good discounts on offer during this month to tempt us all into continuing to spend.
If a retailer wants to shift stock for the new season, then January furniture deals on end-of-line products can also get bigger as the month continues. However, if a mattress is being discounted because it's a discontinued line, then waiting does run the risk that the product may sell out before it drops to its lowest price.
Bank Holiday furniture deals
Bank Holiday furniture deals also offer another opportunity to shop for less. From the end of June into July, and often throughout August, retailers may cut prices again. August Bank Holiday furniture deals can see particularly low prices, as the last UK Bank Holiday of the year is often a key time for consumer spending.
Amazon Prime Day furniture deals
It may not be the first place you'd think of looking for furniture, but Amazon Prime Day – the brand's yearly price-slashing event – can mean some great Prime Day furniture deals.
This year, Prime Day furniture deals ran from the 11th to the 12th of July, offering low prices and the super quick delivery Prime is known for.
Usually, Prime Day furniture deals are a once-a-year event, however, this year a second price-slashing event has been announced in October. Exact dates are still to be confirmed, but keep an eye on our Amazon Prime Day deals to be the first to hear when they're unveiled.
In the meantime, you could sign up for Amazon Prime membership so you're all set to shop when the next Prime Day furniture deals take place. Generally, you need to be a Prime member to take advantage of the biggest discounts on Prime Day. You can sign up or renew your membership below. Black Friday & Cyber Monday furniture deals
The term 'Black Friday' originated in the US to denote the first day following Thanksgiving when retailers would cut prices to draw holidaymakers to shop their store's sales. Driven by global brands, the price-slashing event soon crossed the pond, and now Black Friday – closely followed by Cyber Monday – has become one of the UK's biggest consumer extravaganzas, rivalling traditional Boxing Day sales.
Often hailed as the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday always falls on the last Friday of November, so the next time it will roll around is Friday 29th November 2024.
That said, in recent years, the event has spread to encompass more than just one day, with retailers starting Black Friday discounting earlier and earlier so that a full Black Friday 'week' of discounts isn't uncommon. In fact, in the past few years, we've seen retailers running Black Friday promotions throughout the whole month of November.
Whether or not you agree with the rampant consumerism Black Friday has now come to represent, there's no denying it can be a great time for Black Friday furniture deals and Cyber Monday furniture deals.
