When to shop
Whether you're looking to invest in the best pillows money can buy, want a new mattress topper to increase the comfort levels of a less-than-comfortable mattress or sofa bed, or want to swap out your winter bed linen for a fresh spring look and vice versa, there's no denying that investing in new bedding doesn't come cheap.
That's why we're very much in favour of finding bargain bedding that allows you to overhaul your bedroom setup and invest in some five-star boutique-hotel-style luxury for less.
Finding the cheapest prices on bed linen, pillows and duvets can all come down to knowing when to shop, so below we've highlighted a few key dates that will help you to time your search for the best bedding deals with the times that retailers are most likely to be slashing their prices.
Boxing Day bedding deals
If you're done with the turkey and ready to nab a bargain, then you'll find many retailers offering discounts on Boxing Day, and Boxing Day bedding deals can often start well before Boxing Day itself, with online retailers increasingly offering discounts as soon as their pre-Christmas shipping dates have passed.
January bedding deals
Hang on a bit longer than Boxing Day, and you might be able to score some even better January bedding deals.
Retailers know most of us are a little strapped for cash in January thanks to Christmas spending, so there can be some good discounts on offer to tempt us to spend.
If a retailer wants to shift stock for the new season, then discounts on end-of-line products also tend to get bigger as the month continues, however, waiting does run the risk that your product may sell out before it drops to its lowest price.
Bank Holiday bedding deals
From the end of June into July, and often throughout August, retailers may cut prices again. This is especially likely on seasonal bed linen, where retailers will want to sell through on duvet covers or pillowcases with a particularly summery feel as they make way for winter lines with thicker and cosier fabrics.
As long as you don't mind packing away your bargain until the warm weather rolls around again, then summer Bank Holiday bedding deals can be a great time to stock up on lightweight linen and summery floral bedlinen, as well as low tog summer duvets.
Black Friday & Cyber Monday bedding deals
The term 'Black Friday' originated in the US to denote the first day following Thanksgiving when retailers would cut prices to draw holidaymakers to shop their store's sales. Driven by global brands, the price-slashing event soon crossed the pond, and now Black Friday – closely followed by Cyber Monday – has become one of the UK's biggest consumer extravaganzas, rivaling traditional Boxing Day sales.
Often hailed as the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday always falls on the last Friday of November, so the next time it will officially roll around is Friday 29th November 2024.
That said, in recent years, the event has spread to encompass more than just one day, with retailers starting Black Friday discounting earlier and earlier so that a full Black Friday 'week' of discounts isn't uncommon. In fact, in 2022 we saw retailers running Black Friday promotions throughout the whole month of November, and the same happened in 2023. Black 'month' now seems to be a thing.
Whether or not you agree with the rampant consumerism Black Friday has now come to represent, there's no denying it can be a great time for Black Friday bedding deals and Cyber Monday bedding deals.
In previous years, Black Friday bedding deals have delivered some hefty discounting, with sales at John Lewis & Partners and The White Company (although the retailer brands its own event as a 'White Weekend' instead), up to 40% off at M&S, up to 70% off at DUSK, up to 50% off at La Redoute, and a whole host more savings.
As the event draws closer you'll find our editor's top picks across the wider furniture and home appliance categories in our Black Friday deals round-up. You might also want to browse our guides to the best mattress deals, furniture deals, and sofa deals to save more money on investing in your home.
FAQs
How can you tell if you have found a good bedding deal?
A deal is only a good deal if the product is actually good. So first and foremost, check the reviews if it isn't bedding you have bought before until it's sale time.
While you can only learn so much about the bedding quality online, read through the specs such as fabrics used, the thread count, if applicable, and check reviewer notes on construction as this is often where poor quality becomes obvious.
Shopping for bedding on sale means you are probably looking for pieces that would usually have been way out of your price range at other times of the year, like linen or silk bedding or a high thread count cotton set. That said, you will still need to set a budget in your mind and stick to it, no matter how much has been knocked off the price.
What is a good price for bedding?
The price range for bedding varies greatly because there are so many sizes, styles, material types and manufacturers.
The most common fabrics for bed sheets are usually cotton, silk and linen and luckily all of them are natural fibres which are breathable and help to regulate temperature. They all have their unique characteristics and because of this, they vary quite a bit in price. We break down what you're likely to pay for each.
Cotton is a classic, affordable bed sheet material is pure cotton. Egyptian cotton is one of the most luxurious types with a smooth, crisp feel and a price tag to match. And the higher thread count, the more you'll likely pay.
Be prepared to pay a little extra for linen and silk. Linen gets softer over time, regulates temperature and doesn’t retain moisture so you’ll be cool in the summer and warm in winter. Just like linen, silk is temperature regulating and also naturally hypoallergenic, perfect to help retain moisture in skin and hair.
You’ll also find cotton/polyester blends (polycotton), which cost a lot less, are more durable and wrinkle-resistant, but they may not feel just as natural or comfy.
